Joel Bustos graduated from the National School of Plastic Arts UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) 1999-2004, with the thesis: The light in the room, a project in black lithography.
«I have tried to keep in mind throughout my work: The development of the technical, and the formal characteristics in painting. The first is to value the craft of painting; starting from the elaboration of the support, which is always rigid (canvas on board) and work on it first to be ready to receive the oil; select from a series of images the one that satisfies the idea to develop, having in mind that figurative painting requires the greatest effort, a basic mastery of drawing and an understanding of color to represent masses, light, emptiness, textures. To make that the knowledge and mastery of the material is necessary, and always perfectible to the extent that one advances as a plastic artist. The second is the persistence of light in each of my paintings. Light is no longer just a phenomenon that determines the volume of each one of the objects, or a visual resource to separate the close-ups from the second and third. In my work I intend that light becomes one more element in the composition of the painting, with a fundamental weight, that it becomes evident.»
