Dmitry Gutov

Dmitry Gutov
Dmitry Gutov was born in Moscow in 1960. Lives and works in Moscow.

Dmitry Gutov has been one of the central figures of Russian contemporary art for over twenty years. He is not only an artist, but also a theorist, art critic, as well as an ideologist, member of the editorial board and author of the magazine "Art Life". Associated with the name of Gutov is the organization in
1994 in Moscow of the Mikhail Livshits Institute, an amusing regiment of contemporary Russian art that combines features of an artistic project, a community of intellectuals theorizing in the spirit of terry socialist aesthetics, and performance. For example, sometimes reports at the Livshits Institute could only be sung or recited, but not read. In the humorous expression of B. Groys, Gutov is an “ideological terminator”.

As an artist, Dmitry Gutov turns to a variety of media, moves from one to another. This includes photography, painting, video, installation, and digital art.
According to A. Ter-Oganyan, Gutov is one of the best artists of his generation. As a person with an academic education in art history, he does not disregard the history of culture. Gutov turns to classical art, appropriates Rembrandt's etchings, Russian icon painting, oriental calligraphy, creating new "readings" - in volume, from a metal ribbon. Gutov freely operates with any cultural objects, regardless of time and space, turning them into phenomena of contemporary art. In his work, Gutov, according to V. Misiano, reveals "the will to clarity of thought."
