Today, August 9, is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, established by the UN. It`s a day of the Indians of North and South America, the Maori of New Zealand, the Sami of Scandinavia - about 476 million people in 90 countries, also five thousand languages and cultures.
In Russia indigenous peoples are represented by the Evenks in the Far East, the Aleuts in Kamchatka, the Abazins in Karachay-Cherkessia, the Rutuls in Dagestan and the Vod people in the Leningrad region. The smallest indigenous peoples of Russia are the Kereks (or Arakykku, Ankalgakku - “seaside people”). In 2010, there were four people living in the Beringovsky district of Chukotka.
The situation of the world's indigenous peoples was seriously discussed in the 1950s for the first time, and they began to independently defend their rights in the mid-1970s. The International Day of the World's Indigenous People was approved only in 1994. For almost three decades, not only human rights defenders, but also artists have joined the discussion of this theme.
One of the most impressive photo projects dedicated to the diversity of cultures is a journey across five continents "Homage to Humanity" by British photojournalist Jimmy Nelson. A series of photographs reveals the beauty and life of 34 tribes and peoples from all over the world.

The Brazilian artist Eduardo Cobra also chose the theme of the world's indigenous peoples. Mural "Ethnos" with an area of 2787 sq. meters appeared in Rio de Janeiro after the Olympic Games. On the wall are five faces from five continents that echo the five Olympic rings. Mr Kobra explained, “Indigenous peoples of the world. We are all one and all connected”.

The Russian artist Radik Musin also inspired by the theme of indigenous peoples. On his paintings a woman from the Mikmak Indian tribe and, presumably, a Tibetan girl. Other portraits include women in national costumes of Chuvashia and Bashkiria and also Armenia and Mongolia.

The artists are followed by the writers. In the next year, 2022, a new phase begins - the Decade of Indigenous Languages. Let's see how he will stir up modern world culture.
